GFile Library of AmiNet CD-Rom Based Titles, v1.0 README File!
============================================================================
General Description
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If you have a CD-Rom connected to your system, you also most probably are
the owner of one or more of the AmiNet Amiga-Based CD-Rom disks.
This package is a GFILE LIBRARY containing index listings of ALL FILES
contained on the following CD-Roms: AmiNet # 5, AmiNet # 6, the 4 CD-Rom
based AmiNet SET I, as well as the AmiNet # 7 CD-Rom.
The files contained in this archive were extracted from the directory
sorted "AMINET_DIR_DOC" file, located in the "LISTS/" directory of the
AmiNet # 7 CD-Rom. Each list contains the title, size, cd location, as well
as short description of each directory housed within AmiNet. Each listing
has also been automatically colorized, as well as having an informational
header attached to the start of each listing.
These files can be used by your users to get an idea as to what they can
find in each library within AmiNet, and can even be used as a means of your
users to REQUEST files(for those of us with just 1 CD-Rom online), so they
can ask us to place a particular AmiNet CD-Rom in the drive to snag files
off of.
How to Install?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
To install the included gfile library, do the following:
1: Go into your GFILES section of the bbs and create a new listing using
the filename of "Aminet" (Capitalize the "A" for aesthetics later).
2: Change any of the list settings you feel the need to, just make sure to
specify the above for the filename. For the title, you can specify any
text of your choosing, but keep in mind that the listings given pertain
to ALL AmiNet CD-Roms, so your title may wish to reflect this point.
3: Now, either from a shell, or through a directory program, go into your
GFILES: path and DELETE the "Aminet/" directory that CNet created above.
4: Using LHA again, unpack the "AMINET_GFILES.LHA" archive directly into
the path that the "Aminet/" directory you deleted above was stored in.
5: This archive contains a NEW "Aminet/" directory, which in turn houses
numerous other directories!
6: Once it's unpacked, you're all set! Nothing special was done as far as
formatting or colorizing of the text goes, as I know that each of you
has a particular format you like to use, however I did create a simple
ENTRY file(in the main "Aminet/" directory). This file tells your users
how to interpret the information given in the "C" column of each listing.
GFile Library Pointers
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
- It is highly recommended that you do NOT disable the MORE prompt in
any of the directories, as some of the listings are rather long, so
the More? prompt can be quite helpful.
- Although the files can be downloaded easily enough, keep in mind that
they DO contain MCI-Color codes, which will ALSO be sent if a user
states they wish to download a list or two. To create a "clean" list,
using no mci codes, it is suggested that the user's activate their
text buffer, then READ one(or more) listings. They can then use their
buffer commands to SAVE the file(which will have been stripped of the
MCI codes during transit).
Anything Else to Add?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Yes! This is the first in a series of files I'll be working on to make
working with, and using the Aminet series of CD-Roms easier for both YOU
and your users.
I'll be doing an online searcher, automatic requester, etc. in the
months to come, as well as possibly adding features to this library as well.
I'm also toying with some automated adoption scripts, so much automated,
that all you'll need to do is insert an AmiNet CD-Rom into the drive, enter
the UD Base you wish files to be adopted into, then typing ONE COMMAND to
create all the subdirectories needed, as well as adopting all the files
contained in said directories, and even using the file's short description
for CNet's short description, then(depending on how you have it set), using
the file's ".readme" file either as the file's LONG description, or else
have these files adopted as well(with either the short description being to
use the "GRAB" command to read it, or else automatically set the auto-grab
this file on reading it)!
If there's a specific feature pertaining to the use of AmiNet CD-Roms
you'd like to see implemented for CNet Amiga, drop me a line and I'll see
what I can do.
